Mary Oliver Poem

The Egret

The Egret is a poem by Mary Oliver about all the little fish and the frogs being in the water when the egrets show up. When they do they are both terrified of being eaten. It's almost like its a surprise attack. This relates to American History Majorly. This relates to historical figure George Washington after his heroics at the Battle of Trenton during the War for Independence.

The Battle of Trenton is considered by some the turning point in the war. On December 25, 1776 Geroge Washington and 5,400 soilders crossed the Delaware River in hopes of surprise attacking a force of Hessians. Washington led his troops across the river and then he spilt his troops up into 2 groups and then he surrounded the city full of Hessians. Washington took over 1000 prisoners while just losing 4 American Lives. This was a big surprise attack that boosted America's moral in the war. This action relates to The Egret. Both the poem and the battle had a surprise attack, both improved moral (if you can eat when you are hungry that boosts moral), and both changed momentum. For the egret, he gets food so he doesn't feel bad and Geroge Washington got a win under his belt.

The poem "The Egret" by Mary Oliver shows us an egret who surprise attacks a frog and fishes in the pond. This directly relates to American History with the Battle of Trenton during the War for Independence. So if you like social studies/history, go outside and you could maybe find connections.
